Meet Amber, an Area Team Lead for the Blythe, Indio, and Palm Desert centers in California. Thanks to supportive leadership and the tuition assistance program, she had the opportunity to explore her strengths — and her career is flourishing. Walk us through your career journey. How did you move from Patient Care Technician (PCT) to Area Team Lead? I thoroughly enjoyed my position as a PCT, but after nearly five years in that role, I experienced an injury that forced me off the treatment floor. Fortunately, there was an opening for a Ward Clerk, and this role allowed me to explore a different facet of the business. After a couple years, I was promoted to Clinic Secretary, and I returned to school to complete my degree. As I approached graduation, the position of Facility Administrator became available. Just two weeks after I began that role, COVID hit. Learning my new responsibilities during this challenging period was indeed difficult, but I was fortunate to have exceptional leaders and a supportive network within the area. Then, a new ATL position opened up. I saw this as a tremendous opportunity for career growth and decided to apply. I also took on the role of Facility Administrator in the Indio center. These opportunities not only expanded my responsibilities, but also exposed me to a larger center with different challenges and barriers. It allowed me to put my skills to the test and further develop my career. How has your professional development and career growth been supported along the way? The leadership at every point in my journey has played an enormous role in my professional development and career growth. They saw something in me and pushed me until I saw it, too. Leadership helped me find resources within the company to get me where I needed to be. Fresenius Medical Care’s tuition assistance program was essential in me being able to return to school while being a single mom.
